Description:

This exciting tour will take you to a true Soviet secret bunker in Ligatne, where the Latvian communist elite planned to flee the nuclear war. Here you will find authentic exhibits of that era: an autonomous power plant, air purification systems, and a telecommunications unit with a direct connection to the Kremlin.

The 2,000 sq m underground bunker was the most forceful autonomous economic structure with all the necessary and most modern equipment of that time, as well as one of the most strategically important places in Latvia of the Soviet era in the event of a nuclear war. The site has a secure underground workspace – a shelter, sanatorium-type sleeping quarters for 250 people, support facilities, and a 24-apartment house for service personnel. All authentic underground equipment and plans have survived to this day.

What about lunch? The real Soviet classic is a collective farm set: soup, compote (served in faceted glasses), and rye bread.

After walking into the bunker, you will go to the local wine tasting. In the cozy cellar in the Lustizis rock’s cave, you can taste more than five kinds of homemade wines served with local cheese. The welcoming hosts will tell you the story of Ligatne, how mysterious caves appeared, and about local wine traditions.
